HANDS, has been granted official documents recognizing and authorizing the organization to operate as NPO in the DR Congo.
Final match of the Soccer tournament held at the soccer field of Mugogo/Walungu, organized by HANDS DRC
In the framework of youth development and social cohesion, HANDS DRC organized a soccer tournament that reached 10 villages of the Lurhala group in Walungu territory. Each village was represented by locally selected players, their village leaders and their supporters.
The atmosphere of our activity was animated by a group of traditional dancers commonly called « NTOLE » in the presence of the national delegation of HANDS DRC, local leaders and the local population consisting of young girls and boys, men and women. The joy and applause were immense.

Firstly, before the launch of the match at 14:55, our colleague SAFARI François, in charge of the program, took the floor and thanked all the teams as well as the delegation of supporters who came to accompany the two finalist teams who had to fight for the final.
Secondly, the National Coordinator took the floor for a word of circumstance and that to encourage the young people and congratulating them for the efforts made to reach this stage of the tournament. Moreover, he thanked the President of the Board of Directors Mr. ASSANI MUHANUZI Berckmans for the courage and love he has for his land to have done his best to make this activity materialize and that it can produce tangible results in this community. He also emphasized that HANDS is a philanthropic organization at the service of the community and not an organization with political purposes nor a political party.
However, this Sunday 07th August, 2022, the final match took place at the soccer field in Mugogo between the team of KAHANDA and the team of RUGOHWA. The match started at 14:55 and ended at 16:45 with a score of 0 goals per game during the regulation time. Due to the time constraint, after 5 minutes of extra time, the game went directly to the penalty shootout. After the penalty shootout, the team of KAHANDA won by 4 goals to 2. Therefore, the said village was the winner of the tournament organized by HANDS.
At this stage of handing over the cup, Mr. Consolat BARAKA, Coordinator of HANDS DRC encouraged and congratulated all the teams represented but in particular the winning team of the tournament. He also added that this tournament was of great importance for the organization in that it will allow to occupy the young people during the vacations and especially to reinforce the social cohesion in the grouping of Lurhala in particular and the whole territory of Walungu in general. Thus said, he began to call the captains and presidents of each team to receive their gifts starting with the last of the competition to the winner.
Finally, the winning team or the champion village of the competition received the cup with all the honors and favors related to it.

Pigs breeding project in the 66 villages of Lurhala Sector conducted by HANDS
The territory of Walungu, particularly in the Lurhala group, is facing an acute food crisis. This situation is partly linked to several important factors. These include difficult physical and environmental conditions, poor availability of arable land, lack of funding for agricultural activities, low agricultural production, land grabbing by elites (political, religious, military, etc.), recurrent insecurity, etc. This unfortunate situation is at the root of several scourges. However, today the local population is a victim of extreme hunger, high morbidity rate, growing illiteracy, etc.
For this reason, the organization HANDS through its agro pastoral project, has thought to initiate a pig breeding project in the 66 villages of the grouping of Lurhala, territory of Walungu. This being the case, and given the financial constraints, we thought of first serving 24 pilot villages before extending the project to the whole of the Lurhala group in particular and to the whole of Walungu territory in general.
HANDS being a philanthropic organization, we intervene in various fields, including livestock breeding. Indeed, after having proceeded to the training of May 17, 2022 of the beneficiaries of our project of breeding of pigs, we assigned ourselves to make a decent on June 04, 2022 for the distribution of these pigs to the pilot farmers who benefited from this training. Thus, through the said training, these beneficiaries were equipped with the necessary knowledge to take care of their pigs and aspire to the expected results in the days to come.
In view of this, these pictures illustrate very well in terms of Objectively Verifiable Indicators (OVI) the progress of this activity. However, two categories of stakeholders were present during this day. In particular, the beneficiaries (CIKALA) and the distributors who are members of the HANDS Coordination sent to the field by the Board of Directors to make this activity effective.
However, all doors are open to people who would like to support this humanitarian work and of such great importance to reduce poverty and food insecurity in households of Lurhala in particular and the territory of Walungu in general.

Earthquake damage to school in South Kivu
December 8, 2017 an urgent message reached us from our friends at the school project in the village of Ciriri, South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Emmanuel camunani Ndagano, who is one of the teachers and an administrator at the school project in South Kivu reported earlier by e-mail that an earthquake has hit the region on December 7 at around 1:00 a.m..
This earthquake had a magnitude of 4 on the Richter scale, according to Emmanuel. The area does see more earthquakes, but now there have been a few in a short time span.
Assani Muhanuzi in Winkler, Manitoba Canada has been in touch with those on the ground and he reported that, with God’s blessings, nobody at the school project got hurt in the quake.
The school has sustained some minor damage, most of it because there is no proper foundation under the building. It is our understanding that it is safe for classes to continue however, the foundation to the building will have to be strengthened and this needs to be done so it will withstand any possible future geo-structural movement or tremors.
The pictures we are showing here give an impression of the dire need for properly engineered foundation, or at least a significant and lasting base for the building to be secured on and in.
During the Christmas school break, some work will be done on this and a better foundation will be made.
